My lesson plans are based on the museum’s collection and the art techniques and ideas that artists in our collection use. Many lesson plans are arts-integrated STEAM or Humanities activities so that teachers can more easily and deeply use art while fulfilling their curricular requirements.
Activities aim to incite Lakota learners’ with a deeper connection to their culture. When tailored to non-native learner classrooms, these activities aim to approach cultural ideas with integrity and avoid appropriative pit-falls such as mimicking the designs of beadwork or parfleche or contextualizing living cultures in a 19th century framework.
Lessons in the Museum Bag for quillwork, shown here, include Common Core Standards, assessments, and all the materials for the activities: printable handouts, collection images, videos of artists, magnifying glasses, and art supplies.
Gallery Cards
Our gallery cards are designed and written to expand visitors’ knowledge of culturally-specific art forms. They highlight art forms that we often exhibit in the gallery and that illuminate features of Plains Nations' aesthetic heritage.
Gallery Interactives
In close collaboration with our curator, I develop and maintain gallery interactives. We design our activities to augment visitors’ interest in and appreciation for exhibition artwork.
